Reliable and transparent analytical solutions

Founded in 2025 in response to a growing need for accurate and transparent fire-performance data, Pyrolab is an independent laboratory committed to supporting manufacturers, engineers, specifiers and the wider construction industry.

As a privately owned laboratory, Pyrolab is committed to delivering reliable results, communicating findings clearly and sharing technical knowledge with industry.

Through rigorous testing and transparent processes, we help clients navigate changing standards, make evidence-based decisions and contribute to safer buildings in South Africa and beyond.

Fire safety begins with understanding how materials behave when exposed to fire.

Appearance, composition and supplier claims alone cannot establish performance. Standardised testing provides measurable evidence of characteristics such as ignitability, flame spread, heat release, smoke production and flaming droplets, information that supports responsible product development, specification and material selection.

Test Method Capabilities

Understand how your materials perform

Pyrolab offers reaction-to-fire, combustion and material-characterisation testing for building products and industrial materials. We work with clients to identify the appropriate test method, specimen requirements and evaluation program for each product and intended application.

Reaction-to-fire testing
SANS 11820

Non-Combustibility

Designed to assess the non-combustibility performance of the building and railway material under a 750°C furnace.

Thermal properties
SANS 1743 / EN 1743

Bomb Calorimetry

Measure the heat of combustion of a substance in a controlled, oxygen-rich environment.

physical Properties
SANS 11925-2

Single Flame Source Tester (Ignitability)

Determine the ignitability of products by a direct small flame impingement to vertically mounted specimens without additional irradiance.

Bomb calorimetry
SANS 53823 / EN 13823

Single Burning Item Testing

Assesses a building product’s contribution to fire growth, lateral flame spread, smoke production and flaming droplets under a localised fire exposure.

Bomb calorimetry
ISO 9705

Full-scale Fire Scenario Evaluation

Evaluate how internal wall and ceiling lining materials contribute to fire growth and flashover.

Bomb calorimetry
ISO 5660-1

Heat release rate, ignition and combustion profiling

Evaluate the heat release rate and the dynamic smoke production rate of specimens exposed in the horizontal orientation to controlled levels of irradiance with an external igniter.

Bomb calorimetry
NES 713

Smoke and Toxic-Gas Assessment

Evaluates smoke characteristics and the gases produced when a material burns under specified test conditions.

Bomb calorimetry
ASTM C518

Thermal-Conductivity Testing

Measures the transmission of heat through insulation and related materials under a controlled temperature difference.

Bomb calorimetry
ASTM D1621

Mechanical-Property Testing

Evaluates properties such as compressive strength and tensile behaviour to help clients understand how materials perform under mechanical loading.
